Dec 04, MAURITIUS (sun) — To all cow lovers of the world! A Special message:

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Shamkrsna das prabhu has to look after four cows at his own house, within 2 rooms of an apartment!

In order to avoid skidding on the tiles, he has put rubber covers on the floor, and so the cows are happy as they know that their benefactor is living nearby them, providing the necessary fodder and water, as well as veterinary care. He personally cleans daily the rooms, and keeps tidy so as not to have flies all over.

The cows are named thus: Laksmi mata, Sushila mata (7 months), Maha-laksmi mata (8 months) and Vrnda Mata (10 months). Another cow - 6 months old - is due to arrive tomorrow from a Muslim ranch!

Another way of cow protection is to give cows to poor persons, so they can earn some money with milk, and we also have 2 cows given recently, to the great joy of the recipients.

At the back of his house is an unfinished gosala, destined to shelter up to 30 cows that he saves from slaughter, whenever he has the opportunity. The construction has cost about $5000, and about $10,000 is required to complete the job.

The last acquisition was a lovely 23 yr old cow, who gave 9 calves during her life. The owner, instead of sending her to the butcher as it is usually done in this country, has learned about the benefactor for cows, and phoned him so as to have her cow sheltered for life. She was scared at first to leave the family, where the owner was getting too old to fetch the grass daily. This is done by carrying the grass bundle on the head - something like 50 pounds! However, the new generation does not seem to go into cow keeping due to disappearing grass fields and intensive construction on this small island, where 95% of the milk is imported from Australia/New Zealand.

Fortunately, the friendly neighbours never said a word about this strange arrangement for the cows, as Shamkrsna usually gives them free milk whenever there is any, following his belief that milk should never be sold....

In order to finish the construction of the gosala, which will also include a small temple at the entrance, Shamkrsna is appealing to all cow lovers to help him in this task, which will bring much benefit to the donors as well as the Mauritian society, where cows are still considered by many as just a milk machine as well as fresh meat, after the divine gift of milk giving. Last week, thousands of bulls were sacrificed on Eid festival, in the streets, in front of children...

All donations will be published on this website, so that transparency is visible. Thanks very much, in advance!
