Fourth Prakrama - Second Sarga

The Vista of Mathura Manala


tatah prayagam asadya / dtva shri-madhava prabhuh
premananda-sudha-purno / nanartta sva-janaih saha 1

tatah - then; prayagam - Prayaga; asadya - reached; dtva - saw; shri-madhavam - the Deity of Bindu-Madhava; prabhuh - the Master; prema-ananda - the bliss of love; sudha - nectar; purnah - filled; nanarta - danced; sva-janaih - with His own men; saha - with.

Then Gaura Prabhu travelled to Prayaga. There as Mahaprabhu beheld the Deity of Bindu-Madhava He became overwhelmed by premananda-sudha as He danced in the company of His people.

shrilakaya-vata dtva / triveni-snanam acaran
yamunaya ca sammajya / ntyan parindra-lilaya 2

shrila - glorious; akaya-vatam - imperishable banyan; dtva - after seeing; tri-veni - confluence of the three rivers: Ganga, Yamuna and Sarasvati; snanam - bath; acaran - showed by example; yamunayam - in the Yamuna; ca - and; sammajya - bathing; ntyan - dancing; parindra - of a lion; lilaya - like the play.

Then He saw the imperishable banyan tree named Akshaya-vata, and bathed in the Triveni, thus teaching the standard for humanity. After Gauranga had bathed in the Yamuna, He began to dance like a playful lion.

hunkara-gambhiraravaih / premashru-pulakair vtah
vrajan kramat tam uttiryya / vana cagra dadarsha ha 3

hunkara - roars; gambhira - deep; aravaih - with cries; prema-ashru - tears of love; pulakaih - with erect hairs; vtah - covered; vrajan - going; kramat - gradually; tam - that; uttirya - crossing; vanam - forest; ca - and; agram - Agra; dadarsha - saw; ha - indeed.

Crying out with deep thundering roars, all the hairs of His body thrilled with rapture, and He became bathed by His own love-tears. After some time the Lord crossed the river and saw the forest of Agra.

tatraiva renuka nama / gramo yatra yudha patih
jamadagnir mahatma ca / punya-ketre yayau tatah 4

tatra - there; eva - surely; renuka nama - named Renuka; gramah - town; yatra - where; yudham patih - the master of fighters; jamadagnih - Lord Parashu-rama; maha-atma - great soul; ca - and; punya-ketre - in the sacred place; yayau - He went; tatah - then.

In that forest was the town of Renuka. In that very spot the great soul Parashurama, the son of Jamadagni, and Renuka and master of all warriors, took his birth. The Lord visited that sacred tract of land.

tatraiva yamuna dtva / vndaranyonmukhi sada
raja-grama tato gatva / gokula prekya vihvalah 5

tatra - there; eva - surely; yamunam - Yamuna river; dtva - having seen; vnda-aranya - the forest of Vrinda; unmukhi - facing; sada - always; raja-gramam - the town of the King; tatah - then; gatva - having gone; gokulam - Gokula; prekya - seeing; vihvalah - overwhelmed.

After seeing the Yamuna river, which forever flows through the forest of Vrindaranya. Advancing further to Rajagrama, He became overwhelmed with feelings of ecstacy as He looked upon the realm of Gokula.

maharanya ca sampashyan / mathura ca dadarsha ha
raja-dhani mahaishvaryya-yukta parama-shobhanam 6

maha-aranyam - the great forest; ca - and; sampashyan - thoroughly seeing; mathuram - the city of Mathura; ca - and; dadarsha - saw; ha - indeed; raja-dhanim - capital; maha-aishvarya - great opulence; yuktam - endowed with; parama-shobhanam - supreme beauty.

After looking over the forest of Mahavana, Gaura saw Mathura, the capital, which was endowed with great opulence and designed with exquisite craftmanship.

shri-vaikunthadi-dhamna hi / paramaradhana bhuvi
shri-kna-prakata capi / prema-bhakti-pradayinim 7

shri-vaikuntha-adi-dhamnam - of the abodes of the Lord of Vaikuntha and of all worlds; hi - certainly; parama-aradhanam - supremely worshipable; bhuvi - on the earth; shri-kna-prakatam - the manifestation of Shri Krishna; ca - and; api - assuredly; prema-bhakti - devotional love; pradayinim - bestower.

Throughout this earth, Shri Mathura is the most worshipable spot. Indeed, it is the most worshippable of all the abodes of the Lord of Vaikuntha, for it is there that svaya bhagavan Shri Krishna the original Personality of Godhead manifested Himself in this world. Undoubtedly Mathura Dhama is itself able to award prema-bhakti.

dtva gaura-harih prema-vikara-sarvva-sayutah
hasan ntyan rudan bhumau / viluthan pulakacitah 8

dtva - having seen; gaura-harih - Lord Hari in His golden complexion; prema-vikara - transformations of Krishna-love; sarva - all; sayutah - endowed with; hasan - laughing; ntyan - dancing; rudan - crying; bhumau - on the earth; viluthan - rolling about; pulaka - hairs erect; acitah - expanded.

Simply by glancing over that place, the Golden Lord experienced all the transformations of Krishna-prema. While laughing, dancing, weeping and rolling about upon the earth, His body became covered by large thrill bumps which appeared like kadamba flowers.

tatraiva kashcid dvija-varyya-sattamah / pashyan hari prema-vibhinna-dhairyyah
romancitair yukta-sa-gadgada kti / papata padau jagad-ishvarasya 9

tatra - there; eva - surely; kashcit - a certain; dvija-varya - best of the twice-born; sattamah - eminent; pashyan - seeing; harim - Lord Hari; prema - love; vibhinna-dhairyah - patience fractured; roma-ancitaih - expanding of the hairs; yukta - having; sa-gadgadam - with choked throat; kti - virtuous; papata - He fell; padau - at the feet; jagat-ishvarasya - of the Lord of all sentient beings.

A certain eminent brahmana was observing these activities of Shri Hari. Suddenly his own composure also became wholly shattered by emotions of Krishna-prema. As that fortunate soul fell at the feet of Gaura Jagadishvara, his voice became choked, and his hair-follicles erupted.

kas tva bhavan prema-vibhinna-dhairyyo / dto 'si me bhagya-vashad iti svayam
pritah punah praha sa eva ca prabhu / daso 'smy aha te bhagavan daya-nidhe 10

kah - who?; tvam - you; bhavan - your honor; prema - love; vibhinna - fracture; dhairyah - patience; dtah - seen; asi - you are; me - by Me; bhagya-vashat - by the force of good fortune; iti - thus; svayam - spontaneously; pritah - pleased; punah - again; praha - he said; sah - he; eva - certainly; ca - and; prabhum - the Master, dasah - servant, asmi - I am; aham - I; te - Your; bhagavan - O all-opulent Lord; daya-nidhe - O ocean of mercy.

The Lord said, "May I know your grace's identity? By the influence of good fortune, I have seen your composure devastated by the symptoms of prema." That vaishnava, his heart engladdened, replied to Prabhu, "O Bhagavan! O ocean of mercy! I am Your eternal servant.

namna hi matra yadi kna-dasas / tathapi tvad-darshana-bhagyavan aham
kpa-nidhe vaishnava-pada-renubhih / puniha ma nanda-kishora gaura 11

namna - by name; hi - certainly; matram - only; yadi - if; kna-dasah - Krishna Dasa; tatha api - still; tvat-darshana - the sight of Your Lordship; bhagyavan - fortunate; aham - I; kpa-nidhe - O jewel of compassion; vaishnava-pada - the feet of vaishnavas; renubhih - by the dust; puniha - purify; mam - me; nanda-kishora - O youthful son of Nanda; gaura - O golden Lord.

"I am known as Krishna Dasa, but by name only do I have that honor. However, I am now rendered fortunate by Your darshana. O jewel of compassion! Kindly purify me with the dust from the feet of the vaishnavas, O youthful son of Nanda! Golden Lord!"

shrutva prabhur hara-rasabdhi-magnah / praha tva eva khalu kna-dasah
shri-kna-dhamno hi rahasya-lila / janasi sarvva kathayasva sattama 12

shrutva - having heard; prabhuh - the Master; hara-rasa - mellow of joy; abdhi-magnah - immersed in the ocean; praha - He said; tvam - you; khalu eva - certainly; kna-dasah - the servant of Krishna; shri-kna-dhamnah - of the abode of Shri Krishna; hi - surely; rahasya-lilam - confidential pastimes; janasi - you know; sarvam - all; kathayasva - speak of it; sattama - O pure soul.

Hearing this, Shri Prabhu became immersed in a sea of transcendental bliss and said, "Most certainly You are a bonafide servant of Shri Krishna, indeed you are conversant with the confidential pastimes of Krishna's dhama. O pure soul! Kindly narrate all of them to Me."

sa tv enam aha shnu keshava prabho / yadi svaya bhakta-janabhimani
tathapi padau vinidhaya me hdi / prakashaya tva madhu-mandala nijam 13

sah - he; tu - but; enam - Him; aha - he said; shnu - listen; keshava - O Keshava; prabho - O Master; yadi - if; svayam - Yourself; bhakta-jana-abhimani - He who is pleased by His devotees; tatha api - still; padau - the two feet; vinidhaya - placing; me - my; hdi - in the heart; prakashaya - revealing; tvam - You; madhu-mandala - the circular area of Mathura; nijam - Yourself.

But the brahmana replied to the Lord, "Hear me, O Keshava Prabhu! If You are actually pleased with this bhakta, then by your heart's desire place Your two feet within my heart and reveal to me Shri Madhu Mandala."

pitva ca tasya vacanamrita harir / jagada jimuta-gabhiraya gira
mad-ajnaya te ca shri-kna-lilah / sphurantu dhamani ca sarvvatah sukham 14

pitva - having drunk; ca - and; tasya - his; vacana-amritam - words of nectar; harih - the dispeller of evil; jagada - said; jimuta - cloud; gabhiraya - with deep; gira - utterances; mat-ajnaya - by my order; te - to You; ca - and; shri-kna-lilah - the pastimes of Shri Krishna; sphurantu - they must be displayed; dhamani - the abodes; ca - and; sarvatah - in all ways; sukham - happily.

Shri Hari drank deep of his nectarean words and replied in a deep resonant voice like a thundercloud, "By My order, may the pastimes of Krishna and every delightful aspect of His holy abodes be revealed to you."

tada sa viprash caranabja-sannidhau / papata harena prabhor daya-nidhe
dhtva padau te mama mastakopari / sandarshayiye bhavate ca sarvvam 15

tada - then; sah - he; viprah - the learned brahmana; carana-abja - lotus feet; sannidhau - near; papata - he fell; harena - with joy; prabhoh - of our Prabhu; daya-nidhe - O ocean of mercy; dhtva - having held; padau - two feet; te - Your; mama - my; mastaka - head; upari - above; sandarshayiye - I shall completely show; bhavate - unto Your honor; ca - and; sarvam - all.

Then fell joyously at Prabhu's lotus feet, the learned brahmana said, "O ocean of compassion! Just place Your feet upon my head, and I shall certainly show all of the holy places to Your Grace."

iti bruvan gaura-rasena matto / ntyan rudan prema-vibhinna-dhairyyah
shri-rasa-lilambu-vilasa-vaibhavam / agayata gopi-patir muhur muhuh 16

iti - thus; bruvan - saying; gaura-rasena - by the mellow of Gaura; mattah - intoxicated; ntyan - dancing; rudan - weeping; prema - due to love; vibhinna-dhairyah - patience shattered; shri-rasa-lila - pastimes of the rasa dance; ambu-vilasa - water pastimes; vaibhavam - influence; agayata - he sang; gopi-patih - the master of the milkmaids; muhuh muhuh - again and again.

So saying, intoxicated by Gaura-rasa, and agitated by feelings of prema, Krishna Dasa danced and wept. And the master of the gopis, sang shloka after shloka describing the glorious water-sports which Shri Shyamasundara played in Yamuna with the gopis who were weary from rasa-dancing.

prapa jagan-mohana-lilaya harih / sukha rajanya vraja-keli-varttaya
shri-radhika-krina-vilasa-lasya / jagau para bhakti-rasena purnah 17

prapa - He took; jagat-mohana - enchanting the universe; lilaya - by the pastime; harih - remover of sin; sukham - pleasure; rajanyam - at night; vraja-keli - playful sports of Vraja; varttaya - by the descriptions; shri-radhika-krina-vilasa - pastimes of Shri Shri Radhika-Krishna; lasyam - dancing; jagau - sang; param - transcendental; bhakti-rasena - mellows of devotion; purnah - full.

Throughout that night, Shri Gaura Hari took pleasure in narrating the world-enchanting playful sportive pastimes of Vraja, and sang with devotional feeling of the transcendental dance pastimes of Shri Radhika-Ramana.

Thus ends the Second Sarga entitled "The Vista of Mathura Manala," in the Fourth Prakrama of the great poem Shri Krishna-Chaitanya Carita.
