Mar 25, 2011 — CANADA (SUN) — A serial exploration of Srila Prabhupada's preaching on Srimad Bhagavatam.

As a last step in considering Srila Prabhupada's preaching on Srimad Bhagavatam 1.1.2, we will summarize the references made to other sastric verses, both in the purport to the verse and in the five lectures we've covered on this sloka. In the SB 1.1.2 purport itself, Srila Prabhupada quotes only one other verse – S.B. 1.1.1:

"Srimad-Bhagavatam explicitly promulgates this simultaneously-one-and-different philosophy of the Vedanta-sutra, which begins with the "janmady asya" [SB 1.1.1] sutra."

Throughout his five lectures on SB 1.1.2, Srila Prabhupada quotes many different sastric sources, including the following:

It's interesting to note that among the primary points we've identified and paraphrased from the five SB 1.1.2 lectures, the verse most often cited by Srila Prabhupada (other than verse 1.1.2 itself) is Bhagavad-gita 18.66:

sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja

"Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me."

Srila Prabhupada's references to Bhagavad-gita 18.66 appear in his lectures on SB 1.1.2 as follows:

London, August 16, 1971:

"So this is the Vedic process. This is the Vedic process. Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya. Janmady asya yatah satyam param dhimahi. So the... If you, instead of making speculation, if you simply surrender to Vyasadeva, his writings, srimad-bhagavate maha-muni-krte, then the result will be kim va paraih: you do not require to study any other literature. The result will be, if you surrender to the study of Srimad-Bhagavatam, that Isvara, the supreme controller, sadyo hrdy avarudhyate... Isvara is already there, but here it is used, the word avarudhyate, "He is locked up." He wants to be locked up. Krsna, Paramatma, He wants to be, but we don't care. But by reading Srimad-Bhagavatam, by discourses in Srimad-Bhagavatam, isvara sadyah, immediately, hrdy avarudhyate. But in whose heart He becomes locked up? Krtibhih. Krtibhih means those who are pious. Those who are sinful, they cannot. Krtibhih susrusubhih. Two things: he must be pious. That pious, piety, as soon as he surrenders... Just like Krsna says... Piety, it is not that "Then I have to become pious first of all; then I shall understand Srimad-Bhagavatam. So it will take long time." No. If will take tat-ksanat, in a second. In a second. How? Simply by surrender. As soon as you surrender, immediately you become pious. How immediately? Yes, Krsna says,

    sarva-dharman parityajya
    mam ekam saranam vraja

    aham tvam sarva-papebhyo
    moksayisyami ma sucah

Sarva-dharman... As soon as you surrender: "Krsna, I was misled so long. Now, today, I am surrendering unto Your lotus feet. Now, if You like, You kill me or protect me, as You like." Then everything is all right."

London, August 18, 1971:

"So this bhagavata-dharma is not for such envious persons. Therefore it is stated here, paramo nirmatsaranam satam. Not for the envious persons. The envious persons--that means materialists--they will not be able to understand what is spoken in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Srimad-bhagavate maha-muni-krte kim va parair isvarah sadyo hrdy avarudhyate. So our process is, because we are envious by nature, therefore we have to cleanse our heart. Therefore we have to chant Hare Krsna mantra very rigidly, regularly. Then our, this enviousness, the dirty things will be over, and we shall be able to understand what is Srimad-Bhagavatam... Srimad-Bhagavatam is the graduate study. Those who are interested in God, for them, this is graduate study. The entrance study is Bhagavad-gita. Just like you pass your entrance examination, matriculation examination, then you are entered into college, then you become graduate; similarly, after reading Bhagavad-gita, you are allowed to enter into the understanding of God. Because in the Bhagavad-gita the ultimate instruction is sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja. There are discussion of the yoga, karma, jnana, bhakti... Everything is there in the Bhagavad-gita. But ultimately the last instruction is that "This is the secret of success, My dear Arjuna," guhyatamam. "You simply surrender unto Me, and I shall give you all protection." Ma sucah, "Don't bother." This is required. This is the beginning of God consciousness. So unless we have finished nicely the study of Bhagavad-gita or unless we have accepted this proposition of God that "You surrender," there is no entrance in the Srimad-Bhagavatam.

So our, this Krsna consciousness movement is bhagavata-dharma. Bhagavata-dharma means one who has at least understood what is God. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu begins His teaching where Krsna ended. Krsna and Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the same Personality of Godhead. As Krsna, He demanded... Because God can demand like that. Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja: "You just surrender unto Me." What God can say? God cannot say that "You jump over My head." God can say like that, "You surrender." That is God's word. God cannot allow you that you jump over His head. You can jump over His head, but that requires great advancement of love for God. That is another thing. Just like the cowherd boys, they are jumping over Krsna. That position... You can also have, but after krta-punya-punjah. After amassing many lives' simply pious activities, you can have that post. Just like it is said in the Srimad-Bhagavatam:

    ittham satam brahma-sukhanubhutya
    dasyam gatanam para-daivatena
    mayasritanam nara-darakena
    sakam vijahruh krta-punya-punjah

Vyasadeva is describing the cowherds boy."Oh, these cowherds boy, they are krta-punya-punjah. They accumulated many millions of births' pious activities, and now they are allowed to play with Krsna as His friend." Krta-punya-punjah. Ittham dasyam gatanam.

So Caitanya Mahaprabhu therefore begins... People misunderstood Krsna. There are rascal scholars; they misunderstood. Krsna says, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam. "Give up everything. Simply surrender unto Me alone." Mam ekam. He doesn't say even to Narayana or Visnu. Because we are so fool. As soon as Krsna will say, "I am Visnu, I am all," then "Everything is one. Everything is one." That's all. Therefore He says particularly, mam ekam, "Only unto Me alone." Because if one understands Krsna, then gradually he understands other things. But in the beginning if it is said... Similarly, in Bible also, I have seen that "Through me." Because they were so fool, if they are allowed to go elsewhere, they will commit mistake. Therefore that was nice. To the foolish person such stress required to be given. Mam ekam. But still, the foolish person misunderstood Krsna, misinterpreted Bhagavad-gita. Therefore Mayavadis. Therefore same Krsna came as Lord Caitanya, as devotee. This time not as the Supreme Personality of Godhead but as devotee, to teach us how to approach Krsna. That is Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

So Caitanya Mahaprabhu therefore begins His teaching where Krsna ended. When Sanatana Gosvami approached him, Sanatana siksa... You have learned it from Caitanya..., Teachings of Lord Caitanya. So He begins from that point where Krsna ended. Where Krsna ended? Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja. And Caitanya Mahaprabhu begins from there. Jivera svarupa haya nitya-krsna-dasa. When Sanatana Gosvami inquired from him, "What I am?" so He replied that "You are eternal servant of Krsna." This is the beginning of bhagavata-dharma. Unless we understand that we are eternal servants of Krsna, there is no beginning of spiritual life. It is still material life. That conviction must be there."

Caracas, February 23, 1975:

"Man-made religion has no value. So man-made religions, there are so many religious system, the Hindu religion, Christian religion, Mohammedan religion or this religion, that religion. That is a kind of faith. But religion means the order or the laws given by God. Therefore here it is said, dharmah projjhita-kaitavah atra. Kaitavah means cheating type of religious system. Real religion means "God is there. I am there. God is great. I am subordinate. I must abide by the laws of God." This is religion. At the present moment, under the spell of illusion in this material condition, we have forgotten our real religion. Real religion means to revive our consciousness--we say, "Krsna consciousness"--or God consciousness, by which we agree to abide by the laws of God. So Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita at the end, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja. He says that "You have manufactured so many religious system. So you give up all these. You simply surrender unto Me." Therefore real conclusion is, real religion means, to surrender unto God."

There are two main phrases in the SB 1.1.2 verse that Srila Prabhupada has emphasized by quoting Bhagavad-gita 18.66 in his lectures:

"Completely rejecting all religious activities which are materially motivated, this Bhagavata Purana propounds the highest truth, which is understandable by those devotees who are fully pure in heart.
    (SB 1.1.2 Translation)

Emphasizing true dharma and the inviolable rules of God as opposed to mundane religious activities aimed at satisfying the senses, Srila Prabhupada states:

"Real religion means to revive our consciousness--we say, "Krsna consciousness"--or God consciousness, by which we agree to abide by the laws of God. So Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita at the end, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja (BG 18.66). He says that "You have manufactured so many religious system. So you give up all these."
    (February 23, 1975)

Using references to Bhagavad-gita 18.66, Srila Prabhupada also puts great emphasis on the final statement made in SB 1.1.2:

"As soon as one attentively and submissively hears the message of Bhagavatam, by this culture of knowledge the Supreme Lord is established within his heart."
    (SB 1.1.2 Translation)

In support of this statement in the Bhagavatam verse, we find the following references to Gita 16.22:

"Srimad-Bhagavatam is the graduate study. Because in the Bhagavad-gita the ultimate instruction is sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja."
    (Lecture, August 18, 1971)

"So Caitanya Mahaprabhu therefore begins... People misunderstood Krsna. There are rascal scholars; they misunderstood. Krsna says, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam. "Give up everything.'"
    (Lecture, August 18, 1971)

"So Caitanya Mahaprabhu therefore begins His teaching where Krsna ended. When Sanatana Gosvami approached him, Sanatana siksa... You have learned it from Caitanya..., Teachings of Lord Caitanya. So He begins from that point where Krsna ended. Where Krsna ended? Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja."
    (Lecture, August 18, 1971)

The essence of SB 1.1.2 -- "As soon as one attentively and submissively hears the message of Bhagavatam, by this culture of knowledge the Supreme Lord is established within his heart." – is unlocked for us by Srila Prabhupada, with the key of Bhagavad-gita 18.66: 'This is the secret of success, My dear Arjuna… you simply surrender unto Me.'
