shri-chaitanyavirbhava
The Appearance of Shri Chaitanya
shnuvavahita brahman / chaitanyasyavatarakam
navina jagad-ishasya / karuna-varidher vibhoh 1
shnuva - hear; avahitam - with attention; brahman - O brahmana; chaitanyasya - of Shri Chaitanya; avatarakam - the appearance; navinam - novel; jagat-ishasya - of the Lord of the universe; karuna-varidheh - of the ocean of mercy; vibhoh - of the great, all-pervasive, sense-controlled one.
O brahmana, please hear attentively about the unique appearance of that ocean of compassion, the all-pervasive and sense-controlled Supreme Master of the cosmic manifestation, Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
gate devari-varye tu / svashrame bhagavan parah
jagannathasya viprarer / manasy avishad acyutah 2
gate - when he had gone; deva-i-varye - best of sages amongst the demigods; tu - and; sva-ashrame - to his own hermitage; bhagavan - the all-opulent Lord; parah - supreme; jagannathasya - of Jagannatha Mishra; viprareh - of the brahmana-sage; manasi - in the mind; avishat - entered; acyutah - the infallible.
When Narada, the chief of demigod sages had departed for His own ashrama, the infallible Lord, who possesses infinite opulences, entered within the mind of the brahmana sage, Shri Jagannatha Mishra.
tenahita mahat-tejo / dadhara samaye sati
etasminn antare sadhvi / shaci pati-parayana 3
tena - by that; ahitam - conceived; mahat-tejah - very powerful semen; dadhara - bore; samaye - at the time; sati - chaste; etasmin - in that; antare - within; sadhvi - the saintly lady; shaci - Shrimati Shaci Devi; pati-parayana - dedicated to her husband.
By virtue of the Lord's presence, in due course of time, the chaste and saintly Shaci Devi conceived Jagannatha's powerful seed within her womb.
lebhe garbha harer asha / gangeva shambhava shubha
tasyas tejo 'tivavdhe / shulka-pake yatha shashi 4
lebhe - She got; garbham - pregnancy; hareh - of Lord Hari; asham - expansion; ganga - the Ganga river; iva - like; shambhavam - the potency of Shiva; shubha - blessed; tasyah - of her; tejah - potency; ativavdhe - grew; shukla-pake - in the waxing moon; yatha - as; shashi - the moon.
She became pregnant with the expansion of Shri Hari, as the blessed Ganga river bore the potency of Shiva. Her luster increased day by day like the waxing moon.
ta dtva rupa-sampanna / tapta-camikara-prabham
shriya yukto jagannatho / mumude hta-manasah 5
tam - her; dtva - having seen; rupa-sampannam - filled with beauty; tapta-camikara - molten gold; prabham - the effulgence; shriya - with opulence; yuktah - connected; jagannathah - Jagannatha Mishra; mumude - rejoiced; hta-manasah - jubilant in heart.
When Jagannatha Mishra saw his wife becoming filled with great beauty and a luster like molten gold, he felt blessed with much opulence, and his heart exulted.
atha ta tadshi dtva / deva brahmadayo 'pare
gandharva amara ye ca / ye ca sendra nabho gatah 6
atha - then; ta - her; tadshim - in such a state; dtva - having seen; devah - the demigods; brahma-adayah - headed by Lord Brahma; apare - others; gandharvah - celestial musicians; amarah - immortals; ye - who; ca - and; ye - who; ca - and; sa-indrah - with Indra; nabha gatah - taken to the skies.
Seeing Shaci in such an exalted state, the demigods headed by Brahma and others such as the gandharvas, the immortals, together with Indra took to the skies.
ktanjali-puto harat / sashru-kantha-vilocanah
tutuvur muditah sarve / pranamanatah kandharah 7
kta-anjali-putah - with folded hands; harat - out of jubilation; sa-ashru - with tears; kantha - throat; vilocanah - eyes; tutuvuh - they offered praises; muditah - jubilant; sarve - all; pranama - obeisances; anatah - bowed; kandharah - shoulders.
Tears filled their eyes and choked their throats out of jubilation, and with folded hands and bowed heads, they offered these prayers all blissfully.
namami tva sada garbham / aditi janani hareh
candrarkagni-prabha-garbham / sattva-garbha dhti kamam 8
namami - I bow down; tvam - to You; sada - eternally; garbham - in your pregnancy; aditim -Aditi; jananim - mother; hareh - of Lord Hari; candra - moon; arka - sun; agni - fire; prabha - luster; garbham - womb; sattva-garbham - pure pregnancy; dhtim - maintenance; kamam - patience.
"I bow down to you, O Aditi, mother of Shri Hari. Your womb is effulgent like the moon, sun and fire. By your pure and patient pregnancy, you maintain the Lord.
advea-garbha sasiddhi / veda-garbha svaya hareh
devaki rohini caiva / yashoda sarvatha bhavam 9
advea-garbham - your pregnancy is devoid of hate; sasiddhim - all perfections; veda-garbham - the womb of the Vedas; svayam - in person; hareh - of Shri Hari; rohinim - Rohini; ca - and; eva - certainly; yashodam - Yashoda; sarvatha - in His every incarnation; bhavam - becoming.
"Your pregnancy is free from envy and blessed with all perfection. Indeed yours is the womb of the Vedas, and You personally give birth to Lord Hari in His every incarnation, becoming Devaki, Rohini, and Yashoda.
ta vai vibhari garbhe tva / yo yajna prathayiyati
kirtanakhya maha-punya / yad yajnair nopapadyate 10
tam - that; vai - indeed; vibhari - You bear; garbhe - in your womb; tvam - you; yah - who; yajnam - sacrifice; prathayiyati - He makes famous; kirtana-akhyam - describing in congregational chanting; maha-punyam - very purifying; yat - which; yajnaih - by fire sacrifices; na - not; upapadyate - obtained.
"In your womb You bear He who will spread the process of yajna named sankirtana. The sankirtana-yajna has great purificatory potency unobtainable through the Vedic process of yajna.
kirtana n-hareh shrutva / nimiardhena ya bhavet
pritir asmadsha sa tu / koti-yajnair bhaven na hi 11
kirtanam - chanting; n-hareh - of the Lord in a human-like form; shrutva - by hearing; nimia-ardhena - by half a moment; yah - they who; bhavet - can be; pritih - love; asmadsham - of such as ourselves; sah - he; tu - but; koti-yajnaih - by millions of sacrifices; bhavet - can be; na - not; hi - indeed.
"If even persons such as ourselves hear but for a split-second such kirtana of Krishna's names as Lord Nrihari will bring, they can achieve love for Him. Such love is unattainable even by the performance of millions of fire-yajnas.
aho mahya pura dattam / amta harina svayam
samudra manthana ktva / tatah koti-gunadhikam 12
aho - Oh!; mahyam - to me; pura - in ancient times; dattam - given; amtam - nectar; harina - by Shri Hari; svayam - Himself; samudram - ocean; manthanam - churning; ktva - done; tatah - than that; koti-guna-adhikam - millions of times better.
"Oh, how wonderful! In ancient times Shri Hari in His form of Mohini-murti, personally awarded me amrita after we devas had churned the Garbhodaka ocean with the asuras; yet this hari-namamrita is a million times superior.
rasa pasyama evatra / shnvantah shri-harer yashah
mokam apy anta ceto / manyate kirtanad dhareh 13
rasam - the nectarean juice; pasyamah - we shall drink; eva - certainly; atra - here; shnvantah - hearing; shri-hare - of Shri Hari; yashah - fame; mokam - liberation; api - even; antam - false; cetah - heart; manyate - they think; kirtanat - by chanting; hareh - of Shri Hari.
"Now through our ears we shall drink rasamrita as we hear the glories of Shri Hari. In comparison with such kirtana my heart considers even liberation insignificant."
evam uktva tato devah / sendra jagmuh pranamya ta
brahmanam agratah ktva / gayantah shri-harer yashah 14
evam - thus; uktva - speaking; tatah - then; devah - the demigods; sa-indrah - with Lord Indra; jagmuh - went; pranamya - having bowed down; tam - to her; brahmanam - Lord Brahma; agratah - in front; ktva - putting; gayantah - singing; shri-hareh - of Shri Hari; yashah - fame.
After conversing in this manner, Indra with the devas offered respectful obeisances to Shaci Devi. Then placing Brahma at their head, they departed for their own abodes singing the glories of Shri Hari.
sva puri shri-pater asho / jato bhuvy ati-haritah
kaler bhagya prashasanto / ntyantah prema-vihvalah 15
svam - own; purim - city; shri-pateh - of the husband of the goddess of fortune; ashah - expansion; jatah - born; bhuvi - on the earth; ati-haritah - very jubilant; kaleh - of the age of quarrel; bhagyam - good fortune; prashasantah - praising; ntyantah - dancing; prema-vihvalah - overwhelmed with love.
Shripati's expansion was about take birth on earth. Thus the gods jubilantly lauded the good fortune of the people of Kali-yuga and danced, overwhelmed by prema.
tatah purne nisha-nathe / nishithe phalgune shubhe
kale sarva-gunotkare / shuddha-gandha-vahanvite 16
manasu deva-sadhuna / prasanneu ca shitale
svar-nadyah shuddha-salile / jate jatah svaya harih 17
tatah - then; purne - full; nisha-nathe - when the moon, lord of the night; nishithe - at night; phalgune - in the month of Phalguna, approx. mid-February to mid-March; shubhe - at the auspicious; kale - at the time; sarva-guna - all good qualities; utkare - attracted; shuddha-gandha - pure fragrances; vaha - bearing; anvite - possessed of; manasu - in the minds; deva-sadhunam - of gods and saints; prasanneu - peaceful; ca - and; shitale - cool; svah-nadyah - of the river which flows through the sky; shuddha-salile - when the waters were clear; jate - when it happened; jatah - born; svayam - by His own choice; harih - the Lord Hari.
At the auspicious full moon night of the month of Phalguna, when all virtuous qualities of men were in attendance, and a breeze bearing pure fragrances blew, when the minds of gods and godly men were tranquil, when the waters of the sky-river Ganga were crystal-clear, then did Shri Hari took birth by His own wish.
ta vikashi-kamalekana lasat- / purna-candra-vadana
kanakabham
tejasa vitimira dishah svaya / karayantam upalabhya suta sah 18
priti-sagara-rasasya na para / prapa padma-nidhina yatha 'dhanah
shri-jagannatha-mishra-purandarah / prema-gadgada-mukha sada dadhe 19
tam - Him; vikashi-kamala - blossoming lotus flowers; ikanam - eyes; lasat - shining; purna-candra - full moon; vadanam - face; kanaka - golden; abham - effulgence; tejasa - by His potency; vitimira - free from darkness; dishah - all sides; svayam - Himself; karayantam - causing; upalabhya - observing; sutam - son; sah - he; priti-sagara - ocean of love; rasasya - of mellows; na - not; param - limit; prapa - find; padma-nidhina - by an unlimited treasure; yatha - as; adhanah - poor man; shri-jagannatha-mishra-purandarah - Shri Jagannatha Mishra Purandara; prema - love; gadgada - choking; mukham - mouth; sada - always; dadhe - made.
Shri Jagannatha Mishra Purandara saw His son's eyes as blossoming lotus flowers, His face like the effulgent full moon and His complexion like gold. By the child's potency, darkness in all directions was dispelled. Jagannatha found no limit to the mellifluous ocean of love he felt for his child. He felt just like a pauper finding a vast treasure, and since his voice was choked with love he was unable to speak clearly.
tasya janma-samaye 'nu shashanka / rahur agrasad ala
trapayaiva
kna-padma-vadanena nirjitah / pravishat sura-ripor mukha vidhuh 20
tasya - His; janma-samaye - at the time of His birth; anu - following; shasha-ankam - rabbit-marked (the moon;) rahuh - Rahu; agrasat - swallowed; alam - enough; trapaya - with shame; eva - indeed; kna-padma-vadanena - by Shri Krishna's lotus face; nirjitah - defeated; pravishat - entered; sura-ripoh - of the enemy of the gods; mukham - mouth; vidhuh - moon.
Just after the Lord's birth, Rahu impudently swallowed the moon, considering the beauty of the moon had been utterly defeated by Shri Krishna's beautiful lotus face. Thus while entering the mouth of that enemy of the gods, the moon appeared to disappear.
tatra punya-samaye manujanam / kirtana nara-hareh kta janaih
pujana sapadi jahnavi-jale / snana-danam agha-marjana shucau 21
tatra - then; punya-samaye - at the auspicious time; manujanam - of men; kirtanam - chanting of the names of Hari; nara-hareh - for Hari in His appearance like a human; ktam - done; janaih - by the people; pujanam - worship; sapadi - immediately; jahnavi-jale - in the waters of the Ganga; snana - bathing; danam - penance; agha - sin; marjanam - cleansing; shucau - in the pure.
At that auspicious time, all people performed kirtana of Narahari. With much eagerness they offered worship, took bath, distributed charity, and bathed, cleansing themselves from sin in holy waters of Jahnavi-Ma.
jahshuh sura-ganah sa-mahendrah / padma-sambhava-mahesha-purogah
apsarabhir atintya-parabhir / nayakash ca sumanasi vavaruh 22
jahshuh - they rejoiced; sura-ganah - the hosts of demigods; sa-mahendrah - together with the great Indra; padma-sambhava - lotus-born Brahma; maha-isha - Shiva, the great controller; purogah - headed by; apsarabhih - with the celestial dancing maidens; ati-ntya-parabhih - with great absorption in dancing; nayakah - leaders; ca - and; su-manasi - great minds; vavaruh - showered abundant charity.
The hosts of suras headed by Indra as well as Brahma and Shiva rejoiced and apsaras danced with sublime excellence, while on earth great-hearted social dignitaries showered gifts of charity on deserving persons.
nilambara-cakravarti / janmana tasya haritah
ajagamashrama turna / jamatuh sarva-shastra-vit 23
jagannatha samahuya / shaci sambodhayan sudhih
dauhitra-janma-kala-jna / ida vacanam abravit 24
nilambara-cakravarti - the father of Shaci; janmana - by His birth; tasya - His; haritah - joyous; ajagama - went; ashramam - to the place of spiritual culture; turnam - swiftly; jamatuh - of his son-in-law; sarva-shastra-vit - conversant with all the scriptures; jagannatham - Jagannatha Mishra; samahuya - calling; shacim - Shaci Devi; sambodhayan - informing; su-dhih - highly intelligent man; dauhitra - son of his daughter; janma-kala-jna - knowing about the time of His birth; idam - this; vacanam - statement; abravit - said.
Since he was aware of the auspicious time at which His daughter's son had taken birth, Shri Nilambara Cakravarti who was learned in all shastra, felt joyous on account of the Lord's birth. Quickly he went to the ashrama of his son-in-law, and called for Jagannatha Mishra and Shaci Devi. That very thoughtful gentleman said:
aye purua-siho 'ya / jatah procce bhaspatau
asau sarvasya lokasya / pata nitya bhaviyati 25
aye - Oh! purua-sihah - lion among men; ayam - this person; jatah - born; procce - on the apex of the orbit; bhaspatau - Jupiter; asau - he; sarvasya - of all; lokasya - people; pata - protector; nityam - always; bhaviyati - He will be.
"O how astonishing! This child has taken birth just on the apex of the orbit of Jupiter, the planet of Shri Guru. By this indication I understand that lion amongst men shall give eternal protection to all people.
sushilah sarva-dharmanam / ashrayo nyasina varah
priti-dah sarva-bhutana / purnamta-karo yatha 26
sushilah - having noble character; sarva-dharmanam - of all virtues; ashrayah - shelter; nyasinam - of renunciants; varah - the best; priti-dah - a giver of love of God; sarva-bhutanam - for all living beings; purnamta-karah - the full moon; yatha - like.
"He possesses noble character. Indeed, His character is the original shelter of all virtues. By becoming the topmost of all renunciates, He shall bestow love on all living beings, just as the full moon floods the night sky with nectar.
samuddharta sadaivaya / pit-mat-kula-dvayam
evam ukte dvije tasmin / sarve pramudita janah 27
samuddharta - savior; sada - always; eva - certainly; ayam - this; pit-mat - father and mother; kula-dvayam - the two dynasties; evam - thus; ukte - having spoken; dvije - the brahmana; tasmin - in that; sarve - all; pramuditah - overjoyed; janah - the people.
"This person shall perpetually award deliverance to the dynasties of His father and mother." Hearing the brahmana speak thus, all the people present became overjoyed.
mata harsham ativapa / shrutva tat pit-bhaitam
vatsyash cakara putrasya / jata-karma mahotsavam 28
mata - His mother; harsham - happiness; ativa - intense; apa - got; shrutva - having heard; tat - that; pit-bhaitam - words of her father; vatsyah - His affectionate father; cakara - performed; putrasya - of Her son; jata-karma - birth ceremony; mahotsavam - festival.
Hearing these words from her father, the child's mother felt very happy, and Jagannatha Mishra, feeling much affection for his son, performed a great festival to celebrate his birth.
tambula candana malya / gandha pradat dvijataye
kramenotthana-karmadi-mangalani cakara sah 29
tambulam - betel and chewing spices; candanam - sandalwood; malyam - garlands; gandham - scented oils; pradat - gave; dvijataye - unto the brahmanas; kramena - in course of time; utthana-karma-adi - the child's first standing and other purificatory ceremonies; mangalani - auspicious; cakara - performed; sah - He.
Then he distributed pan, sandal pulp, garlands, and scented oils to the brahmanas. As his son grew, he performed in natural sequence the various auspicious ceremonies, at time of the boy's first standing up and so forth.
Thus ends the Fifth Sarga entitled "The Appearance of Shri Chaitanya," in the First Prakrama of the great poem Shri Chaitanya Carita.
