On Hridayananda Goswami's Facebook site, some disciples explain that he is not chanting on beads because he is suffering from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
"Vivian Varesha Chester: Normally he doesn't chant on beads because he has carple tunnel in his wrists from so much writing and typing on the keyboard."
Interestingly enough, the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome does not prevent him from playing ping-pong, a sport that requires the use of the wrist.
A website writes the following about Ping Pong and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
"Many daily activities or motions will also aggravate the symptoms of CTS, including:
1. Repetitive wrist flexing and extension: manual labor or poor sports techniques in tennis, ping-pong, frisbee, weight-lifting, etc." (Link)
Another website write about CTS:
"Give up game-playing and some web surfing. TV is also bad for you. You need basic exercise, walk or run. No handball, racquetball, tennis, ping-pong, hammering." (Link)
Hridayananda Goswami also spends a considerable amount of time playing piano.
But piano playing is also bad if you are suffering from CTS:
"Carpal tunnel syndrome can be made worse if the wrist is over-extended repeatedly. Repeated motions of your wrist contribute to swelling and compression of the medial nerve. Problems include:
- poor positioning of your wrists while using your keyboard or mouse
- prolonged exposure to vibrations from using hand tools or power tools
- any repeated movement that over-extends your wrist like playing the piano or typing" (Link)
So in spite of Hridayananda Goswami's CTS he able to play quite a bit of ping-pong, piano, other sports, and type quite a bit on his computer keyboard. But it seems he cannot use his beads to chant on. Is it a question of priority?
Also, look at how the devotee commenting on the ping-pong-video on Facebook misuses sastra by stretching the definition of "recreation" to include frivolous sports:
"After finishing his rounds, Acharyadeva is showing us a practical application of Krishna`s instructions from BG 6.17 "He who is regulated in his habits of eating, sleeping, recreation and work can mitigate all material pains by practicing the yoga system"."
It should also be noted that Hridayananda Goswami's claims to have some allergic reaction to tulasi neck beads. Yes, there are many problems with this material body. Let us hope that he also does not develop allergic reactions to dhoti, kurta, gamcha and brahmin thread. Or he might end up being called Anaryadeva.
