Fourth Prakrama - Sixteenth Sarga
pratapa-rudra-anugrahah
The Lord Shows Mercy to Pratapa Rudra Maharaja
tato gaja-pati raja / darshanartha mahaprabhoh
sarvvabhauma samahuya / ramananda-samanvitam 1
tatah - then; gaja-pati - the lord of many elephants, title of the king of Utkala (Orissa); raja - king; darshana-artham - in order to have a sight; mahaprabhoh - of Mahaprabhu; sarvabhaumam - the Bhattacarya; samahuya - summoned; ramananda-samanvitam - in the company of Ramananda Raya.
Then the king of Utkala, lord of many elephants, desired to have darshana of Mahaprabhu. He summoned Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya together with Ramananda Raya.
papraccha sa-tvara pritah / sadara vinayanvitah
darshana gaura-candrasya / sagrajasya katha bhavet 2
papraccha - he asked; sa-tvaram - quickly; pritah - lovingly; sa-adaram - with respect; vinaya-anvitah - with humility; darshanam - a sight; gaura-candrasya - of Gaura-candra; sa-agrajasya - with His elder brother; katham - how?; bhavet - it may be.
In a loving mood, with respect and humility, he asked them by what means he could obtain darshana of Gaura Candra and His elder brother.
sa praha ta maha-raja / darshana durghata tava
upayantaram asadya / kartavya na tu sammukham 3
sah - he; praha - said; tam - to him; maha-raja - O great king; darshanam - sight; durghatam - difficult to get; tava - for you; upaya - means; antaram - other; asadya - attaining; kartavyam - to be done; na - not; tu - but; sammukham - face to face.
Sarvabhauma said to him, "Maharaja, for a king like yourself, it is difficult to have the Lord's darshana. You should adopt some other means to see Him.
yada sankirttanananda-mattau tau parameshvarau
tadaiva te maha-raja / karttavya darshana tayoh 4
yada - when; sankirtana-ananda-mattau - delighted by the joy of sankirtana; tau - the two; parama-ishvarau - supreme controllers; tada - then; eva - indeed; te - your; maha-raja - O great king; kartavyam - to be done; darshanam - sight; tayoh - of the two.
"When those two Supreme Lords become intoxicated by the joy of sankirtana, then, O great king, you may attempt to see Them."
bhadram eva tatha karyya / yatha shighra bhaved dvija
iti praha samutkantho / raja prahasitananah 5
bhadram - blessing; eva - indeed; tatha - so; karyam - endeavor; yatha - as; shighram - speedily; bhavet - it may be; dvija - O brahmana; iti - thus; praha - he said; samutkanthah - very eagerly; raja - the king; prahasita-ananah - with a brightly smiling face.
The king eagerly replied with a brightly smiling face, "O brahmana, kindly bless this endeavor so it may soon take place."
tadaiva kirtanananda-mattau tau parameshvarau
shrutva raja samasadya / dadarsha karunarnavau 6
tada - then; eva - indeed; kirtana-ananda-mattau - the two delighted in the joy of kirtana; tau - the two; parama-ishvarau - two Supreme Lords; shrutva - hearing; raja - the king; samasadya - came; dadarsha - he saw; karuna-arnavau - the two oceans of mercy.
Later, when the king was informed that the Supreme Lords were tasting the delights of congregational kirtana, he came and gazed upon those two oceans of mercy.
ashru-kampa-pulakadyair / nasa-lala-mukhamtaih
manditau tau samudvikya / rajashru-pulakanvitah 7
ashru - tears; kampa - trembling; pulaka - eruptions; adyaih - and so on; nasa-lala-mukha-amtaih - by nectarean saliva from Their noses and mouths; manditau - decorated; tau - the two; samudvikya - gazing; raja - the king; ashru-pulaka-anvitah - covered by tears and erect hairs.
The Lords' bodies were decorated by tears, eruptions and trembling, and from Their noses and mouths flowed nectarean saliva. Gazing upon those two Lords thus ornamented, the king also wept and his hairs thrilled in rapture.
yayau sva-bhavana pritah / suptah svapne dadarsha tau
ratna-sihasana-sthau ca / kirttanananda-vigrahau 8
yayau - he went; sva-bhavanam - to his own house; pritah - pleased; suptah - slept; svapne - in a dream; dadarsha - he saw; tau - the two; ratna-siha-asana-sthau - seated on bejewelled lion seats; ca - and; kirtana-ananda-vigrahau - forms of the bliss of kirtana.
Very satisfied, he returned to his home and went to sleep. Then in a dream he saw the two Lords. Their forms exhibited the bliss of kirtana, and They were seated upon jewelled lion-thrones.
tatah pralambari-mura-dviau sukha / pashyan sada purna-vilasa-vaibhavau
ki ki bruvan bhumi-patan sunirbhara / punah samutthaya dadarsha tau prabhu 9
tatah - then; pralamba-ari - the enemy of Pralamba, Balarama; mura-dviau - the enemy of Mura, Jagannatha; sukham - happily; pashyan - seeing; sada - always; purna-vilasa-vaibhavau - filled with the glories of Their pastimes; kim kim - what? what?!; bruvan - saying; bhumi-patan - falling to the earth; su-nirbharam - with great force; punah - again; samutthayya - rising; dadarsha - he saw; tau - the two; prabhu - Masters.
With great happiness, he beheld those enemies of Pralamba and Mura, perpetually and totally absorbed in Their glorious pastimes. "Oh! What is this? What is this?" Pratapa Rudra cried as he fainted, falling to the earth with great force. When he arose, he again saw the two Prabhus.
eva sa vara-traya eva svapna / dtva rudan prema-vibhinna-dhairyyah
tatah samutthaya jagama sa-tvara / gauranga-padambujayoh samipakam 10
evam - thus; sah - he; vara-trayam - thrice; eva - indeed; svapnam - dream; dtva - seeing; rudan - weeping; prema-vibhinna-dhairyah - composure lost through love; tatah - then; samutthaya - rising; jagama - he went; sa-tvaram - quickly; gauranga-pada-ambujayoh - of the lotus feet of Gauranga; samipakam - near.
Thrice he saw this dream. Losing all sobriety because of prema, he wept. Then arising swiftly he went nearby Gauranga's lotus feet.
pranamya satangam asau punah punah / nipatya bhumau ca rudan muhur mmuhuh
dhtva prabhoh shri-caranambuja hdi / tutava sarvveshvaram adi-puruam 11
pranamya - bowing down; sa-ata-angam - with the six limbs; asau - he; punah punah - repeatedly; nipatya - falling; bhumau - on the earth; ca - and; rudan - weeping; muhuh muhuh - more and more; dhtva - held; prabhoh - of the Master; shri-carana-ambujam - lotus feet; hdi - in his heart; tutava - he satisfied; sarva-ishvaram - the Lord of all; adi-puruam - original Person.
Again and again he arose and fell to the earth before them offering obeisances. Then weeping profusely and holding the lotus feet of Prabhu to his heart, he offered praises to the Lord of all beings, the first among all persons:
jaya jaya jagad-isha prema-purna-prakasha / sakala-jana-nivasananda-bhogendra-shayin
nija-jana-mati-matta-bhnga-cumbi-sva-pada- / sarasija-virahartta pahi ma dina-bandho 12
jaya jaya - glories!; jagat-isha - O Lord of the universe; prema-purna-prakasha - O revealer of the full measure of love; sakala-jana-nivasa - O resident in the hearts of all beings; ananda-bhoga-indra-shayin - who reclines on the coils of the best of snakes; nija-jana - own man; mati - desire; matta-bhnga - intoxicated bee; cumbi - kissing; sva-pada-sarasija - lotus feet; viraha-artam - afflicted by separation; pahi - protect; mam - me; dina-bandho - O friend of the distressed.
"Glories! Glories, O Lord of the universe! You are the revealer of the complete spectrum of love of God! O You who reside in the hearts of all beings! You who lie on the bed of Ananta Shesha Naga, the king of snakes! Friend of the distressed! Kindly protect me, Your own man. I am afflicted by separation from Your lotus feet, like an intoxicated bee hankering to kiss them."
eva stuvanta n-pati jagat-patih / shngara-poa nija-vaibhava prabhuh
shri-vigraha ad-bhujam adbhuta mahat / pradarshayam asa maha-vibhutih 13
evam - thus; stuvantam - praising; n-patim - protector of men; jagat-patih - protector of the universe; shngara-poam - abundance of ornaments; nija-vaibhavam - own glories; prabhuh - Master; shri-vigraham - radiant form; at-bhujam - six-armed; adbhutam - wonderful; mahat - great; pradarshayam asa - displayed; maha-vibhutih - great opulence.
While the king offered praise, Mahaprabhu, the protector of all sentient beings, displayed a radiant form of six-arms. That form was embellished by copious ornaments, and it revealed His own greatness. It was wonderful, magnificent and filled with immense opulence.
purnananda parama-madhura darshayan gaura-candrah
premoddamo jayati satata ghurnayan netra-bhnga
nityanandah svayam api bala divya-madhuryya-purna
premonmadaih shubham api nija vigraha shanta-rupam 14
purna-anandam - filled with bliss; parama-madhuram - ultimate charm; darshayan - showing; gaura-candrah - the Golden Moon; prema-uddamah - unbounded love; jayati - glories; satatam - ever; ghurnayan - rolling; netra-bhngam - eye-bees; nitya-anandah - ever blissful; svayam - Himself; api - very; balam - Balarama; divya-madhurya - divine sweetness; purna - complete; prema-unmadaih - with the madnesses of love; shubham - sublime; api - although; nijam - personal; vigraham - form; shanta-rupam - form of peace.
Glory to the golden moon of Krishna Chaitanya, who displays unbounded love, complete joy and ultimate charm. His eyes forever rove to and fro like bees in search of honey. Glory to the forever-blissful Nityananda, who is Balarama Himself. His personality is filled with divine sweetness, and intoxicated by Gaura-prema His form is sublimely personal and peaceful.
urddhva hasta-dvayam api dhanur-bbana-yukta ca madhya
vashi-vakah sthala-vinihitam uttama gaura-candrah
shea-hasta-dvaya ca parama-sumadhura ntya-vesha sa bibhrat
eva shri-gaura-candra npa-patir akhila prema-purna dadarsha 15
urddhvam - above; hasta-dvayam - a pair of hands; api - also; dhanur-bana-yuktam - having bow and arrow; ca - and; madhyam - middle; vashi - flute; vakah - chest; sthala - broad; vinihitam - placed; uttamam - excellent; gaura-candrah; shea-hasta-dvayam - the last pair of hands; ca - and; parama-sumadhuram - very graceful; ntya-vesham - attitude of dancing; ca - and; bibhrat - holds; evam - thus; shri-gaura-candram - the Golden Moon; npa-patih - the king; akhilam - complete; prema-purnam - filled with love; dadarsha - he saw.
With His upper pair of hands, Gaura Candra brandished a bow and arrow, with the middle pair He held an excellent flute to His broad chest, and the lower pair of hands were held in a very graceful dancing posture. Thus the monarch saw the complete form of Gaura Candra, which was filled with love of Krishna.
dtva shri-hari-ramayoh su-madhura shri-rasa-lila smaran
premashru-pulakavtah katipayan shlokan pathan ntyati
shrimad-bhagavatasya tasya parama madhurya-sarasya ca
shri-gopi-jana-mandali-shubha-gayoh svananda-bhavonmadaih 16
dtva - having seen; shri-hari-ramayoh - of Hari and Rama; su-madhuram - very sweet; shri-rasa-lilam - the rasa dance; smaran - remembering; prema-ashru - tears of love; pulaka - with erect hairs; avtah - covered; katipayan - a few; shlokan - verses; pathan - reciting; ntyati - He dances; shrimat-bhagavatasya - from the spotless Purana; tasya - His; paramam - supreme; madhurya-sarasya - of the essence of sweetness; ca - and; shri-gopi-jana-mandali - who makes a dance-circle with the gopis; shubhagayoh - of the two elegant songs; sva-ananda - with their own bliss; bhava-unmadaih - with ecstatic madnesses.
Having seen that six-armed form of the Lord, Pratapa Rudra Maharaja was reminded of the intense sweetness of Shri Hari and Rama's rasa-lila pastimes, and his body became covered by ecstatic eruptions and tears of love. Thus, while dancing he recited a few auspicious verses describing Krishna and Balarama amidst the assembled gopis, which form the supreme relishable essence of Shrimad Bhagavatam. He recited them in an ecstatic intoxicated mood arising from his own spiritual bliss.
shri-bhagavate dashama-skandhe catus-trishatitamadhyaye:
kadacid atha govindo / ramash cadbhuta-vikramah
vijahratur vane ratrya / madhya-gau vraja-yoitam 17
shri-bhagavate - in the Shrimad Bhagavatam; dashama-skandhe - in the Tenth Canto; catu-trishatitama-adhyaye - in the Thirty-fourth Chapter; kadacit - once; atha - then; govindah - the giver of pleasure to the cows, senses and land; ramah - the reservoir of pleasure; ca - and; adbhuta-vikramah - of amazing prowess; vijahratuh - took pleasure; vane - in the forest; ratryam - at night; madhya-gau - went in the midst; vraja-yoitam - of the women of Vraja.
It is stated in the Shrimad Bhagavatam, Tenth Canto, Thirty-fourth Chapter, verses 20 - 23: "Once Govinda and Rama, the performers of superhuman feats, enjoyed at night in the forest-bowers in company with the milkmaids of Vraja.
upagiyamanau lalita / stri-janair baddha-sauhdaih
sv-alanktanuliptangau / sragvinau virajo 'mbarau 18
upagiyamanau - Their glories being sung; lalitam - charmingly; stri-janaih - by the womenfolk; baddha-sauhdaih - cherished out of affection; su-alankta - nicely decorated; anulipta-angau - limbs smeared with (sandalwood pulp); srak-vinau - garlanded; virajah - spotless; ambarau - garments.
"Their glories were charmingly sung by those womenfolk who were entangled in affection with Them. The Lords were artfully decorated with ornaments, and Their limbs were smeared with the pulp of sandal. They wore flower garlands and spotless garments.
nisha-mukha manayantav / uditodupa-tarakam
jagatuh sarvva-bhutana / manah shravana-mangalam 19
nisha-mukham - the mouth of night (evening); manayantau - honoring; udita - rising; udupa - moon; tarakam - stars; jagatuh - They sang; sarva-bhutanam - for all living beings; manah - the hearts; shravana - the ears; mangalam - happiness.
"The two Lords sang, honoring the approach of dusk and the rising of the moon and stars. Their songs delighted the ears and hearts of all living beings."
dtva ad-bhuja-vigraha prabhu-vara shrimat shaci-nandana
rama rohini-putram eva pulakaih sammanditash cashrubhih
purnah sarvva-mahaj-janash ca satata shri-sarvvabhaumadayah
shri-kna-guna-kirtanamta-rase magna vihasta babhuh 20
dtva - seeing; at-bhuja - six-armed; vigraham - form; prabhu-varam - best of Lords; shrimat - illustrious; shaci - of Shaci; nandana - the delight; ramam - the reservoir of pleasure; rohini-putram - the son of Rohini; eva - indeed; pulakaih - by erect hair; sammanditah - fully decorated; ca - and; ashrubhih - by tears; purnah - full; sarva-mahat-janah - all the great souls; ca - and; satatam - always; shri-sarvabhauma-adayah - Shri Sarvabhauma and the others; shri-kna-guna - the qualities of Shri Krishna; kirtana-amta - the nectar of kirtana; rase - in the rasa; magnah - immersed; vihastah - overwhelmed; babhuh - became.
When all the great souls headed by Sarvabhauma saw their great Master, the illustrious son of Shaci, displaying His six-armed form, and Nityananda Rama appearing as Balarama, the son of Rohini, they also became completely decorated by tears and thrill-bumps. Thus they became overwhelmed and immersed in singing immortal nectarean songs describing the qualities of Shri Krishna.
Thus ends the Sixteenth Sarga entitled "The Lord Shows Mercy to Pratapa Rudra Maharaja," in the Fourth Prakrama of the great poem Shri Chaitanya Carita.
