He who was Uddhava in Krishna-lila came in Chaitanya-lila Aug 07, 2022 — CANADA (SUN) — A serial presentation of Shri Krishna Chaitanya-carita Mahakavya, written by Shrila Murari Gupta (1513 A.D.). Translation into English by Bhaktivedanta Bhagavata Swami.
yayau sa kanci-nagara jagad-gurur / dratu shri-ramanandakhya-rayam 1 tatah - then; prabhate - in the dawn; vimale - pure; shubhe - bright; prabhu - the Master; gayan - singing; harim - the names of Hari; prema-vibhinna-dhairyah - His composure broken by love; yayau - He went; sa - He; kanci-nagaram - the city of Kanci; jagat-guru - spiritual guide of all living entities; dratum - to see; shri-ramananda - as Shri Ramananda; akhya - known; rayam - the governor. Then in the clear, pristine light of dawn, Gaura Prabhu, the guru of all living beings, entered the city of Kanci. He was singing the names of Hari and His composure was shattered with Krishna-prema. He had come to see Ramananda Raya, the provincial governor.
dadarsha vara-trayam adbhuta mahad / gauranga-madhuryyam ativa vismitah 2 sa - he; sva-ghe - in his home; kna-puja - worship of Krishna; avasane - after finishing; dhyayan - meditating; param brahma - the Supreme Absolute Truth; vrajendra-nandanam - the delightful son of the king of Vraja; dadarsha - he saw; vara-trayam - three times; adbhutam - wonderful; mahat - great; gauranga-madhuryam - the sweetness of Gauranga; ativa - exceeding; vismitah - amazed. At that time the governor was in his home, meditating on the delightful son of the King of Vraja, the Supreme Brahma. He had just concluded his Krishna-puja of the shri-vigraha. Then thrice in succession he had a vision of the wonderful and immense sweetness of Lord Shri Gauranga, and he became amazed.
pranamya murdhna vihitah ktanjalih / papraccha kutratya bhavan iti prabho 3 unmilya - opening; netre - his eyes; ca - and; tat - that; eva - very; rupam - form; dtva - seeing; param brahma - the Supreme Spirit; sannyasa-vesham - in the garb of a renunciant; pranamya - bowing; murdhna - with his head; vihitah - arranged; kta-anjalih - folded hands; papraccha - he inquired; kutratya - where living?; bhavan - Your grace; iti - this; prabho - O Master. Upon opening his eyes, he saw directly before him that very same form of the Supreme Brahman, in the garb of a sannyasi. Bowing his head and folding his hands, he inquired, "Prabhu, may I know whence Your holiness has come?
svatmanam eva kathayan svaya harih / sva-bahu-yugmena tam alilinga 4 hasan - laughing; prabhuh - the Master; praha - said; katham - how?; na - not; smaryate - it is remembered; shri-radhika - of Shri Radhika; pada-saroja - at the lotus feet; shat-pada - O bee; sva-atmanam - own self; evam - thus; kathayan - saying; svayam - impulsively; harih - the remover of sin; sva-bahu-yugmena - with both arms; tam - him; alilinga - he embraced him. Laughing, Prabhu replied, "You are a bee seeking honey at Shri Radhika's lotus feet! Why have you forgotten your identity?" So saying, Shri Hari embraced Ramananda with both arms.
ajnapya ketra-gamanaya sa-tvara / ta santvayitva sa yayau janarddanah 5 vnda-atavi-keli - the sports of Vrindavana; rahasyam - confidential; adbhutam - astonishing; prakashya - displaying; tasmin - in that place; rasika - of those expert in relishing rasa; indra-maulih - the crest-jewel; ajnapya - ordering; ketra-gamanaya - to go to Kshetra; sa-tvaram - swiftly; tam - him; santvayitva - pacifying; sa - He; yayau - He departed; jana-ardanah - the inspirer of the hearts of men. Shri Gaura, the crest jewel of rasikas, then and there revealed to Ramananda the confidential and astounding pleasure-pastimes of Shri Shri Radha-Krishna in the groves of Vrindavana. Afterwards He instructed Ramananda to go quickly to Shri Kshetra. Having pacified Ramananda's heart with sweet words, Shri Janardana, who resides within and inspires the hearts of all mankind departed.
vivesha shri-pancavati-vana mahat / shri-rama-sita-smaranati-vihvalah 6 shri-rama-govinda-kna - the names of the Lord; iti - thus; gayan - singing; uttirya - crossing; go-da-varim - sacred river, bestower of water for the cows; eva - indeed; knah; vivesha - He entered; shri-pancavati-vanam - the forest; mahat - great; shri-rama-sita-smarana - remembering Shri Rama and Sita; ati-vivihvalah - intensely entranced. As Shri Krishna Chaitanya travelled, He sang the names, "Shri Rama! Govinda! Krishna!" Crossing the Godavari River, He entered the great forest of Pancavati and became wholly entranced by remembrance of Sita-Rama.
kaverim uttiryya shri-ranga-natha / dtvati-hto hi nanartta sadaram 7 tatah param - after that; shri-jagat-ishvarah - the resplendent Master of the cosmos; prabhu - the Master; calan - walking; pthivyam - on the earth; kakubhah - directions; prakashayan - illuminating; kaverim - sacred river; uttirya - crossing over; shri-ranga-natham - the pleasure-Lord, the great Deity of Vishnu; dtva - seeing; ati-hta - very jubilant; hi - verily; nanarta - He danced; sadaram - with veneration. Thereafter, Shri Jagadishvara walked upon the earth, illuminating all directions. After crossing the holy Kaveri River, Prabhu joyously saw with reverence the great Deity of Vishnu named Shri Ranganatha and danced before Him in boundless delight.
premashru-purna sa nirikya kna / alingya praha shrutam eva yogyam 8 shri-ranga-nathasya - of Shri Ranganatha; samipam - near; vipra - a learned brahmana; gitam - Bhagavad-Gita; pathan - reciting; shuddha-vicara - pure understanding of Sanskrit; shunyam - without; prema-ashru - of tears of love; purnam - full; sa - He; nirikya - observing; kna - Krishna Chaitanya; alingya - embracing; praha - declared; shrutam - this process of hearing; eva - certainly; yogyam - proper. A brahmana seated near Lord Ranganatha was reciting the verses of Bhagavad-Gita, although he did not have clear comprehension of the meaning of the Sanskrit verses. But upon observing that that brahmana's eyes were filled with tears, Gaura-Krishna embraced him, declaring, "Oh, your process of hearing the Gita is indeed correct!"
premashru-purna sa jagada bandhu / shri-kna-varna manasa vicarayan 9 tatra - there; eva - indeed; kashcit - a certain; dvija-varya-sattama - elevated brahmana; dtva - seeing; prabhum - the Master; gaura - golden; su-dirgha-vigraham - very tall form; prema-ashru-purnam - filled with tears of love; sa - he; jagada - he uttered; bandhum - the friend; shri-kna-varnam - chanting the names of Shri Krishna; manasa - with the mind; vicarayan - understanding. There was a highly advanced brahmana who was present in that temple. He observed that our Prabhu's beautiful golden body was of great stature. He saw that His eyes were filled with tears, and that His tongue constantly vibrated the sacred syllables "Krish-na." Considering these symptoms, he concluded that this person must be none other than Shri Krishna, the true friend of all people.
tasya prabhoh shri-carana karabhya / dhtva prahtah karuna nyavedayat 10 aho! - Oh!; sva-bhagyam - his own good fortune; manasa - in his mind; vimya - considering; tri-malla-nama - of the name Trimalla; kila - indeed; bhatta-rajah - king of scholars; tasya - of that; prabhoh - of the Master; shri-caranam - blessed feet; karabhyam - with his hands; dhtva - holding; prahtah - very joyous; karunam - mercy; nyavedayat - submitted. That king of learned scholars named Trimalla Bhatta deliberated, "Aho! What good fortune I have achieved today!" Then, in vast delight, he clasped Gaura Prabhu's blessed feet in his hands and pleaded for His mercy:
tatraiva mayadhamanavatare / kpamtenapi jagat sieca 11 aho! - O!; maha-atman - great soul; karunena - on account of compassion; nah - for us; prabho - O Master; kpam - mercy; vidhatum - to bestow; satatam - always; tvam - You; arhasi - You ought; tatra - there; eva - surely; maya - of the illusory energy; adhamana - making go down; avatare - in this descent; kpa - mercy; amtena - by the nectar; api - truly; jagat - the material worlds; sieca - You shower. "O Supreme Soul! Dear Prabhu! Kindly always show Your mercy to your servants. We have heard through shastra that in Your present avatara, Your Lordship is showering this universe with immortal mercy, and nullifying the power of maya.
pravd-tur agata eva natha / bhtyasya me tva hita-shobhana kuru 12 sarva - all; jana - people; sthavara-jangama - moving and non-moving; adin - and so forth; uddhartum - to deliver; anya - other; na - not; vina - without; api - certainly; knam - who halts the cycle of birth and death; pravt - rainy; tu - season; agata - come; eva - indeed; natha - O Lord; bhtyasya - of Your servant; me - to me; tvam - You; hita - welfare; shobhanam - grace; kuru - do. "Certainly none other than Shri Krishna Himself can deliver all moving and non-moving living entities. He Natha! The rainy season has now begun. Kindly show Your grace to this servant and bless him."
dvijo 'pi tat-pada-saroruha su-dhih / prakalya premna sa-gano dadhara 13 evam - thus; sa - He; bhaktasya - of the devotee; madhuram - sweet; su-vanim - eloquent words; shrutva - hearing; tam - him; alingya - embracing; vivesha - He entered; tat-gham - his home; dvija - the brahmana; api - although; tat-pada-sara-ruham - His lotus feet; su-dhih - highly intelligent; prakalya - washing; premna - with love; sa-gana - with his people; dadhara - he took. After hearing these eloquent words from His devotee, Mahaprabhu embraced him and entered his home. That intelligent brahmana then lovingly washed the Lord's lotus feet, and he placed that water upon his head and drank it together with his family and friends.
stri-putra-svajanaih sarddha / sieve prema-nirbharah 14 sukha - comfortably; asinam - seated; jagat-natham - the Lord of the universe; tri-malla-akhya - named Trimalla; dvija-uttamah - the exalted brahmana; stri-putra-sva-janaih - with his wife, son and relatives; sardham - together; sieve - served; prema-nirbharah - with deep love. The Master of the universe became situated peacefully, and out of feelings of deep love, Trimalla Bhatöa rendered service to Him, assisted by his wife, children and relatives.
ta döva tasya shirasi / pada-padma dayardra-dhih 15 dattva vada hari ceti / so 'pi hara-samanvitah balya-krida parityajya / kna gayan nanartta ca 16 gopala-nama - named Gopala; bala - boy; asya - of this; prabhoh - of the Master; parshve - at the side; sthita - stayed; tada - then; tam - him; döva - seeing; tasya - his; shirasi - on the head; pada-padmam - lotus feet; daya-ardra-dhih - heart melting from mercy; dattva - giving; vada - please chant; harim - Hari's name; ca - and; iti - thus; sa api - that very boy; hara-samanvitah - filled with bliss; balya-kridam - childish play; parityajya - giving up; knam - the names of Krishna; gayan - singing; nanarta - He danced; ca - and. While the brahmana's son named Gopala stood by Prabhu's side, the Lord glanced on him, His heart melting out of mercy for him. The son of Shaci placed His lotus foot upon the boy's head and said, "Just chant the name of Hari!" The heart of Gopala became filled with jubilation. From thta time on, abandoning all boyish games, Gopala solely engaged his time in singing the names of Krishna and dancing.
shri-ranga-ketra-stha-dvijaih supujito / bhikanna-prashadibhir acyutah sukham 17 evam - thus; hi - indeed; pravö-samayam - the rainy season; sthita - staying; harih - the remover of evil; shri-kna - of Shri Krishna's names; sankirtana - the congregational chanting; bhava - ecstacy; bhavukah - heart enlivened; shri-ranga-ketra-stha - situated in Shri Ranga-kshetra; dvijaih - by the brahmanas; su-pujita - nicely honored; bhika - alms; anna - food; prasha - food; adibhi - and so on; acyutah - infallible; sukham - happily. In this way, the infallible Shri Hari, His heart enlivened by the blissful mellows of Shri Krishna-sankirtana, resided throughout the rainy season in Ranga-ketra, well honored with offerings of bhiksha from the brahmanas.
radhika-rasa-vinoda-gadgada- / prema-vari-paripurita-dehah 18 meru-sundara - beautiful as Mount Meru; tanu - body; rasika-ishah - leader of rasikas; kna-nama-guna - the names and attributes of Krishna; kirtana-mattah - intoxicated by Krishna; radhika-rasa - the mellows of Radhika; vinoda - pleasure; gadgada - choked; prema-vari - tears of love; paripurita-dehah - body inundated. That leader of rasikas, whose body was as beautiful as golden Mount Meru, became intoxicated by descriptions of the names and qualities of Shri Kna. As He delighted in this way in the moods of Shrimati Radhika, His body became washed by tears of prema, and His voice was choked by tears.
shri-madhava-puri-shiya / paramananda-namakam 19 uitva - having dwelt; evam - thus; ranga-ketrat - from Ranga-kshetra; gacchan - going; pathi - on the path; dadarsha - He saw; sah - He; shri-madhava-puri-shiyam - the disciple of Madhavendra Puri; paramananda-namakam - named Paramananda. After residing there in that manner, Shri Gaura left Ranga-khetra. While He was travelling, He met a disciple of Shri Madhavendra Puri named Paramananda.
guru-vakyam anusmtya / premashru-pulakancitah 20 pashyan - seeing; shri-paramananda-puri - one of the roots of the tree of love of Godhead; gauranga-vigraham - the body of Gauranga; guru-vakyam - the words of his guru; anusmtya - recalling; prema-ashru - tears of love; pulaka-ancitah - hairs thrilled with rapture. When Paramananda Puri saw the golden body of Shri Hari, he recalled the words that his own guru, I~shvara Puri, had once spoken concerning the Lord. Tears of love came to his eyes, and the his body became covered with pulakas.
nanama parama-prito / dandavat shirasa bhuvi 21 ishvara - the Supreme Lord; api - although; puri-padam - the feet of Paramananda Puri; sa-bhtyam - with his servant; dharma-palakah - the protector of religious principles; nanama - He bowed; parama-prita - in great love; danda-vat - like a rod; shirasa - with His head; bhuvi - on the earth. Although the Supreme Lord, since He is the eternal maintainer of dharma, Shri Gauranga demonstrated the proper standard of Vainava-acara. Falling like a rod to the ground, He placed His head at the feet of Paramananda Puri and his servant.
tva eva jagata natho / jagac-chaitanya-karakah 22 sa-sadhvasam - with consternation; puri - Paramananda; praha - said; ma - not; evam - thus; kartum - to do; iha - in this case; arhasi - You should; tvam - You; eva - certainly; jagatam - of the worlds; natha - the Lord; jagat - in the universe; chaitanya - of consciousness; karakah - the causer. Much alarmed, Shri Puri said, "Lord, it is not proper for You to act in this way, for You are the supreme master of all worlds. Indeed, You are the originally cause of consciousness within them.
shri-radha-bhavam apanno / madhuryya-rasa-lampaöah 23 jnata - it is known; asi - You are; bhagavan - the all-opulent Lord; sakat - in Person; shri-kna-bhakta - of a devotee of Shri Krishna; rupa-dhk - accepting the form; shri-radha-bhavam - the mood of Radha; apanna - accepted; madhurya-rasa - the conjugal mellow; lampaöah - plunderer. "It is known through the evidence of shastra that You are directly Bhagavan Shri Krishna, the Supreme Lord. You have accepted the role of Your own bhakta in order to relish Shri Radha-bhava, and thus You engage in plundering the mellows of madhurya-rasa."
premna te baddha-hdaya / ma janihi na sashayah 24 shrutva - hearing; tat-vacanam - his words; knah - the all-attractive; prahasan - laughing; praha - said; sadaram - with respect; premna - by love; te - to you; baddha-hdayam - bound in My heart; mam - Me; janihi - know; na - no; sashayah - doubt. Hearing Shri Puri-pada's words, Shri Krishna laughed and with great respect He said, "Because of your loving sentiments, you should know that My heart is also forever bound in love to you. Have no doubt of this.
tavad eva bhavan tiöhatv / evam uktva yayau harih 25 gaccha - go; ketram - to Jagannatha Puri; maha-ramyam - very delightful; yavat - until; ca - and; aham - I; samavraje - I return; tavat - then; eva - surely; bhavan - your grace; tiöhatu - must stay; evam - thus; uktva - saying; yayau - He went; harih - the remover of sin. "Your grace, kindly go now to Shri Kshetra for it is very pleasing for bhakti-sadhana and take up your residence there until I return." So saying, Shri Gaura Hari departed on the path. Thus ends the Fifteenth Sarga entitled "Gaura Hari's Joyous Meeting with Shri Paramananda Puri," in the Third Prakrama of the great poem Shri Chaitanya Carita.
