May 30, 2011 — CANADA (SUN) — A serial exploration of Srila Prabhupada's preaching on Srimad Bhagavatam. Today we proceed with another sloka from Srimad Bhagavatam – 1.2.1. In our last segment, we covered SB 1.1.7, 1.1.8 and 1.1.9, grouping these three together because Srila Prabhupada lectured only on SB 1.1.9 among the three. This lecture was the last verse in First Canto, Chapter One he gave class on, the next in succession being SB 1.2.1. Chapter Two of the First Canto is entitled, 'Divinity and Divine Service'. It is comprised of 34 slokas, and Srila Prabhupada gave at least one lecture on each sloka, and multiple lectures on many of them. In the case of SB 1.2.6, for example, he gave 14 separate lectures on that sloka alone. We begin today with the sloka and purport from Srila Prabhupada's original Srimad Bhagwatam, offering a side-by-side comparison of the sloka and translation as it appears in both the Bhagwatam and the first BBT Bhagavatam edition. Here is Text 1 of the Second Chapter, First Canto of Srimad Bhagavatam, with the sloka from Bhagwatam on the left, and from Bhagavatam (without diacritics) on the right:
Here is the original Bhagwatam text for SB 1.2.1: FIRST CANTO SECOND CHAPTER TEXT NO. 1 Iti samprasna samhristo vipranam roumaharsanih Pratipujya vachas tesam pravaktum upachakrame. Iti —thus, Samprasna—perfect enquiries, Samhristo—perfectly satisfied, Vipranam—of the sages there, Roumaharsani—The son of Romasharsana namely Ugrashraba, Pratipujya—after thanking them, Vachas—words, Tesam—their, Pravaktum—to reply them, Upachakrame—attempted. "Thus the son of Romaharsan of the name Ugrashrava, after being satisfied fully on the perfect questionaires of the Brahmins there, he attempted to reply them one by one and thanked them for their words." "The sages of the Naimisharanya asked from Suta Goswami six questions. And he is answering them one by one." As seen below, there are a number of differences between the original Bhagwatam sloka translation (left) and the later BBT edition version (right):
