Corporate ISKCON, Part 24

Today we continue mapping Florida-based organizations that appear to be associated with both ISKCON and other Gaudiya Matha or broad-based Vaisnava organizations. A previously unmapped relationship is found today, between David Earl Roberts, a director of the American Vaishnava Association, Inc., and David V. Jakupko (Kirtiraja dasa). While Roberts did not previously map to a specific organization, you will see that in Cluster Report #1, Roberts is included as a Related Person in the listing for Kirtiraja dasa. That corporate connection will be mapped in a future report.
Over the course of this survey on Corporate ISKCON, we've received several letters of concern from devotees who own commercial businesses that are not associated with ISKCON or the devotees. Their concern stems from the fact that due to this Sun series, there is now a digital 'footprint' linking their English and devotee names, and the names of their commercial enterprises to the Hare Krsnas – a relationship they some would prefer not to have publicly made.
While we understand that in some circumstances, business owners, members of academia and book authors may find that there is some stigma attached to their association with the Hare Krishnas (a situation we've personally experienced on occasion when doing business with non-devotees), we think it's nonetheless important to make those connections a matter of public record. The reason for this will be obvious to some readers: as a society, we need to 'own' our reputation.
It's one thing to be ribbed by business associates about the 60's, and Hare Krishna's handing out incense in the airports. It's another thing to be reminded that ISKCON is known for things like Monkey on a Stick and the Gurukula lawsuit.
We believe that all members of ISKCON should make every effort to improve our public reputation, so we can be proud of our association with the society, not sheepish about it. Very often, those 'white collar' business men/women who tend to be most sensitive to public information about themselves are also persons who carry significant influence in ISKCON. This is a natural dynamic: those with intelligence, skill, connections, and money are often likely to be more public figures than others.
We hope that such persons will become increasingly concerned about ISKCON's public face, and will put greater focus on matters affecting the reputation of Srila Prabhupada's ISKCON. Hopefully, that will translate to increased scrutiny, and increased pressure on ISKCON leaders to run the society in such a way that our reputation shines.
