Fourth Prakrama - First Sarga

kashi-vasi-tapana-mishra-adi-anugrahah
Gaura Shows Mercy to Tapana Mishra and the Residents of Kashi


eva jagau raga-rasan nilacale / shri-kna-sankirtana-purna-manasah
svarupa-mukhyair gadadharadyaih / sama nanartta sa hi nama-kautuki 1

evam - thus; jagau - He sang; raga-rasat - out of attachment; nila-acale - at the immovable blue mountain (at Jagannatha Puri); shri-kna-sankirtana - congregational celebration of Shri Krishna's pastimes; purna-manasah - heart full; svarupa-mukhyai - headed by Svarupa Damodara; gadadhara-adyaih - by those headed by Gadadhara; samam - together; nanarta - He danced; sa - He; hi - certainly; nama-kautuki - eager for the name.

When Mahaprabhu arrived in Nilacala absorbed in the mood of the madhurya-rasa of the rasa-lila, in the company of His beloved devotees headed by Svarupa and Gadadhara, His heart overflooded with the mellows of Krishna-sankirtana, and out of spontaneous attraction for Radha-Govinda's lotus feet, He sang and danced, eager for the nectar of Shri Nama.

shri-sarvvabhaumena saha shri-rama- / nandadayah ketra-nivasino ye
ajagmuh shri-gaura-rasena purnah / papus tu haran mukha-pankaja prabhoh 2

shri-sarvabhaumena - with the Bhattacarya; saha - together; shri-rama-ananda-adayah - headed by Shri Ramananda; ketra-nivasina - the residents of Kshetra; ye - who; ajagmuh - came; shri-gaura-rasena - by the mellows taught by Gaura; purnah - filled; papu - they drank; tu - indeed; harat - out of rapture; mukha-pankajam - the lotus face; prabhoh - of the Master.

Headed by Shri Ramananda and Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya, the residents of Kshetra approached Gaura Prabhu, overflowing with the devotional mellows which they had imbibed from Him, and as they joyously drank the elixirean vision of His lotus face they quenched the thirst of their eyes.

shnvanti sankirtana-nama-mangala / gayanty ananda-samudra-magnah
ntyanti sarvve rasikendra-maulina / gauranga-candrena sama vihastah 3

shnvanti - they listen; sankirtana-nama-mangalam - to the auspicious congregational chanting of the holy names; gayanti - they sing; ananda - of bliss; samudra-magnah - merged in the ocean; ntyanti - they dance; sarve - all; rasika-indra-maulina - with the crest-jewel and best of all rasikas; gauranga-candrena - with the moon of Gauranga; samam - together; vihastah - eager.

Hearing and singing the auspicious sankirtana of Shri Hari-nama, they helplessly drowned within an ocean of ananda, and danced with Shri Gauranga Candra, the crest-jewel of all rasikas.

khanda-sthitah shri-raghunandanadayo / gauranga-bhavena vibhavitantarah
kulina-grama-nivasinah sukha / ntyanti gayanti namanti santatam 5

kashishvara; rama-mukunda; mukhyau - headed by; vakreshvara; raghava-vasudevau; shri-shankara-shri-haridasa-gauri-dasa; adaya - headed by; te - they; hi - indeed; gauda-vasinah - the residents of Bengal; khanda-sthitah - the residents of Khana; shri-raghunandana; adaya - headed by; gauranga-bhavena - with the moods of Gauranga; vibhavita-antarah - internally awakened; kulina-grama-nivasinah - the residents of Kulina-grama; sukham - happily; ntyanti - they dance; gayanti - they sing; namanti - they bow down; santatam - continously.

The inhabitants of Gauda headed by Kashishvara Panita, Nityananda Rama and Mukunda, Vakreshvara Panita, Raghava Panita and Vasudeva Datta, Shankara Panita, Haridasa hakura, Gauridasa Panita, the residents of Khana headed by Shri Raghunandana, and the residents of Kulina-grama were all experiencing the internal awakening of their ecstatic love for Krishna through relishing the moods inspired by Shri Gauranga. Thus they continously danced, sang, and ceaselessly bowed down jubilantly before the Lord.

ntyavasane prabhur acyutah svaya / praha para bhakta-jananukampavan
vndavana ramyam ativa durlabha / gacchami yac ced bhavatam kpa bhavet 6

ntya-avasane - at the end of dancing; prabhu - the Master; acyutah - the infallible; svayam - self-inspired; praha - He said; param - great; bhakta-jana - devotee people; anukampavan - sympathetic; vndavanam; ramyam - enchanting; ativa - extremely; durlabham - rare; gacchami - I am going; yat - which; cet - if; bhavatam - of your honors; kpa - mercy; bhavet - it may be.

When the dancing ended, the infallible and self-inspired Prabhu, the Personality of Godhead, feeling empathy with His devotees, said, "If your good selves would kindly show Me your mercy, I shall now depart for the enchanting and rarely-achieved land of Shri Vrindavana."

pibanti gauranga-mukhabja-piyua / purnas tatha te 'pi su-duhkhita bhsham
krandanti gauranga-padaravinde / nipatya dantagra-tna vadanti 7

pibanti - they drink; gauranga-mukha-abja - Gauranga's lotus face; piyuam - ambrosia; purnah - filled; tatha - and; te - they; api - although; su-duhkhita - very sad; bhsham - intensely; krandanti - they weep; gauranga-pada-aravinde - at His lotus feet; nipatya - falling down; danta-agra - in the tips of their teeth; tna - grass; vadanti - they say.

Although still absorbed in drinking the ambrosia of Gauranga's lotus face, they felt simultaneously intense sorrow of separation and collapsed at His lotus feet weeping. Then, taking straw between their teeth, they said:

tvam eva vndavana-candra he prabho / tathapi dasanumatena vai sarvvam
karttu sada pcchasi samprata kila / tan nanda-nandana-mukhan vidhehi nah 8

tvam - You; eva - certainly; vndavana-candra - O moon of Vrindavana; he - Oh!; prabho - O Master; tathapi - still; dasa-anumatena - by considering Yourself a servant; vai - verily; sarvam - everything; kartum - to do; sada - always; pcchasi - You ask; sampratam - presently; kila - indeed; tat - that; nanda-nandana - as the son of Nanda; mukhan - before the faces; vidhehi - bestow; nah - to us.

"He Prabhu! Undoubtedly You are the supreme master VrindavanaCandraKrishna, Nevertheless, having adopted the mood of servant of the servant, You always request our permission about everything. Accordingly, O son of Nanda, our request is that You kindly remain in our presence."

eva shrutva hasan praha / bhavata sannidhau sada
tithamiti bruvan shighra / gamanaya ktodyamah 9

evam - thus; shrutva - hearing; hasan - laughing; praha - He said; bhavatam - of your honors; sannidhau - in the presence; sada - always; tithami - I stay; iti - thus; bruvan - saying; shighram - speedily; gamanaya - to go; kta-udyamah - made an attempt.

Hearing this, the Lord laughed and replied, "Without doubt I forever dwell in the presence of you great souls." At that, He at once attempted to leave.

rudatas tan samalingya / sa santvayya punah punah
ayasyeti bruvan kno / yayau vndavana shubham 10

rudata - weeping; tan - them; samalingya - warmly embracing; sa - He; santvaya - pacified; punah punah - repeatedly; ayasya - returning; iti - thus; bruvan - saying; kna; yayau - went away; vndavanam; shubham - resplendent.

Krishna Chaitanya warmly embraced His weeping bhaktas, and comforted them, saying again and gain, "I shall return soon." Then He departed for Shri Shri RadhaKrishna's resplendent abode, Shri Vrindavana.

sotkantha dhavatas tasya / matta-siha iva prabhoh
sangino baladevadya / dhavanti tam anuvratah 11

sa-utkantham - with longing; dhavata - running; tasya - of Him; matta-siha - an intoxicated lion; iva - like; prabhoh - of the Master; sangina - of the associates; baladeva-adya - headed by Balabhadra Bhattacarya; dhavanti - they ran; tam - Him; anuvratah - devoted.

Feeling immense longing for Shri Krishna, Gaura Hari ran swiftly appearing like a maddened lion,. Mahaprabhu's companions, Balabhadra Bhattacarya and the other brahmana also followed running after Him.

yatra yatra parvvata ca / nadish ca paramah prabhuh
pashyan govarddhana vndavana kalindim apy asau 12

yatra yatra - wherever; parvatam - a hill; ca - and; nadi - a river; ca - and; paramah prabhuh - the Supreme Lord; pashyan - seeing; govardhanam - the hill of Govardhana; vndavanam - the forest of Vrinda; kalindim - the Yamuna river, daughter of the Kalinda mountain; api - only; asau - He.

Whenever they crossed a hill or river, the Supreme Lord could see only Govardhana Hill, Vrindavana, and the Kalindi River.

matta-hunkara-nirghoo / matta-dvirada-vikramah
ntyati dhavati rauti / kitau viluthati kvacit 13

matta - overjoyed; hunkara - roars; nirghoa - vibrated; matta-dvirada - intoxicated elephant; vikramah - power; ntyati - He dances; dhavati - runs; rauti - roars; kitau - on the earth; viluthati - He rolls about; kvacit - at times.

Moving with the vigor of an intoxicated elephant, He sometimes danced, sometimes ran, sometimes uttered thunderous roars, and sometimes He rolled about upon the earth.

eva kramena bhagavan / kashim upajagama ha
vishveshvara-maha-linga-darshanananda-vihvalah 14

evam - thus; kramena - gradually; bhagavan - the Lord; kashim - Varanasi; upajagama - He approached; ha - indeed; vishveshvara-maha-linga - the great Shiva-lingam named Vishveshvara; darshana-ananda-vihvalah - entranced by the joy of seeing.

Journeying in this way, Shri Gaura Bhagavan gradually reached the city of Kashi. When He saw Vishveshvara, the great Shiva-lingam, He became overwhelmed with bliss .

tatraiva brahmanah kashcit / tapanakhyah su-vainavah
pashyan prabhu maha-hto / ninaya nija-mandiram 15

tatra - there; eva - indeed; brahmanah kashcit - a certain brahmana; tapana-akhyah - known as Tapana Mishra; su-vainavah - a pure vaishnava; pashyan - seeing; prabhum - the Master; maha-hta - very joyous; ninaya - bringing; nija-mandiram - to His own home.

A certain pure brahmana-vaishnava, named Tapana Mishra resided there. Seeing Gaura Prabhu he became very joyous, and brought Him to his home.

tena sampujitah knah / pada-prakalanadibhih
bhika ktva ghe tasya / sukhasino jagad-guruh 16

tena - by him; sampujitah - completely worshipped; knah - Krishna Chaitanya; pada-prakalana-adibhih - by washing His feet and so on; bhikam - alms; ktva - took; ghe - in the home; tasya - His; sukha-asina - comfortably seated; jagat-guruh - the spiritual guide for all living beings.

He worshipped Krishna Chaitanya by washing His feet and offering Him various pleasing articles, and the jagad-guru took His bhiksha comfortably seated within Tapana's house.

tithati tat-sutenapi / raghunathena manitah
tasmai maha-kpa cakre / balakaya mahatmane 17

tithati - He stays; tat-sutena - by his son; api - also; raghunathena - whose name was Raghunatha; manitah - honored; tasmai - to him; maha-kpam - great mercy; cakre - showed; balakaya - to the boy; maha-atmane - noble soul.

He rested there attended to by Tapana's son, Raghunatha. The Lord showed exceptional mercy to that great soul.

candra-shekhara-vaidyasya / ghe tithann api svayam
kashi-vasi-janan kurvvan / hari-bhakti-ratan kila 18

candra-shekhara-vaidyasya - of the physician Candra Shekhara; ghe - in the house; tithan - staying; api - even; svayam - spontaneously; kashi-vasi-janan - the people of Kashi; kurvan - making; hari-bhakti-ratan - attached to devotion to Hari; kila - actually.

By His own sweet will, Gaura resided in the house of a physician, Candra Shekhara, and while staying there He induced even the inhabitants of Kashi to delight in Hari-bhakti.

hari-sankirtanamodi / sva-bhakta-gana-vetitah
hari vadeti sanjalpan / bahum utkipati sada 19

hari-sankirtana - in chanting congregationally the names of Hari; amodi - He took pleasure; sva-bhakta-gana - His devotees; vetitah - surrounded; harim - the name of Hari; vada - chant; iti - thus; sanjalpan - crying; bahum - arms; utkipati - He raised; sada - always.

Surrounded by a group of His bhaktas, the son of Shaci revelled in shri-hari-sankirtana of Shri Hari's names. With His arms ever raised to the sky, He cried out, "Hari Bol!"

Thus ends the First Sarga entitled "Gaura Shows Mercy to Tapana Mishra and the Residents of Kashi," in the Fourth Prakrama of the great poem Shri Chaitanya Carita.
