The harmonium was originally brought to India by Christian missionaries, who used it as a mobile substitute for an organ. Today, it has a central place in Indian music. The harmonium's simple handling has not only made it a popular instrument in Indian folk music and religious music, but has also firmly established it as an accompnaying instrument in classical North Indian Raga music.
